What the printer messages mean

Modified on Mon, Nov 2 at 11:14 AM

Buddi shows printer status in two places:

  • The order queue, as a small chip in the header. This is what staff see all day
  • Store Settings → Printer Settings, with more detail and the buttons to fix things

If a location has no printer set up, nothing about printers appears anywhere. The order queue looks exactly as it always has.

Printer ready

The quiet one. The printer is connected and has paper. Nothing to do.

This stays deliberately small and grey. If it were a big green badge you would stop seeing it within a week, and then you would not notice when it changed.

Printer paper is low

The roll is near its end. The printer is still printing normally.

What to do: load a fresh roll when you get a moment. Nothing is at risk yet.

Printer is out of paper

The printer cannot print, and chits are being held until you load paper.

What to do: load a new roll. Everything that was waiting prints automatically, in order, within a few seconds of the cover closing.

Nothing is lost. The message in Buddi tells you how many chits are waiting. You do not need to find those orders and re-send them.

See Paper: loading, running out and what to buy.

Printer cover is open

The lid is not fully latched. This usually happens right after loading paper.

What to do: press the cover down firmly in the middle until it clicks on both sides. Chits waiting will print once it closes.

Printer offline

The printer has stopped contacting us. Either it has lost power, lost its network connection, or the store internet is down.

What to do: work through Why isn't anything printing?, steps 2 to 4.

Orders are still safe. They are held and print when the printer comes back.

[N] orders have not printed

This is the loud one, and it is the only printer message that takes over the top of the order queue rather than sitting quietly in the corner.

It means two things are true at once: the printer is offline, and orders have come in that have not printed. That combination is the one that actually costs you something, because there are customers waiting on orders nobody has a piece of paper for.

What to do: fix the printer using the article above. Everything prints on reconnect. If a lot piled up, the most recent 20 print immediately and the rest are available to reprint from the order queue, so a busy period does not produce a hundred chits at once.

Two printers are using this setup link

Somebody has entered the same setup link into a second printer, instead of the second printer being added properly.

Both printers are now asking for the same jobs, so chits would otherwise print at one of two places at random.

What we do about it: we pick the printer that was already working here and send everything to that one. The second printer is ignored. Nothing is lost or duplicated.

What to do:

  • If you meant to swap printers, use Replace printer on the Printer Settings page instead
  • If you wanted a second printer, that is not supported yet. Switch CloudPRNT off on the new one, and tell us you want two, so we know people are asking

Printer hardware changed on [date]

Informational, not a problem. It means the setup link is now being used by a different physical printer than before.

This is almost always a deliberate swap. If you did not swap anything, contact us.
