How to Create UPCs for Accessories

Modified on Fri, 25 Apr at 5:38 PM

Having a clean and consistent approach to accessory UPCs is critical for efficient syncing and easy product lookup at the point of sale. A well-structured UPC can help staff quickly find products by memory and ensure your online menus look polished.

NOTE: Buddi supports auto-syncing of accessory products from select POS systems. It's critical to have a UPC for each product.

Why UPCs Matter for Accessories

  • Accessories must have a UPC to sync properly into Buddi.
  • UPCs help you search for products quickly. They should be simple and structured.
  • Good UPCs reduce clutter and errors.

Some accessories already have a UPC generated by the supplier. If there is a Barcode, you can scan it to retrieve the UPC.

If a UPC is not provided, you will need to create one.

UPC Formatting Rules

✅ Use only letters and numbers (no special characters, no spaces).
✅ UPC must be different from the SKU (if your POS requires both fields).
Consistent structure improves searchability and organization.

Example UPCs*:

Product DescriptionUPC
GRAV Glass Bong - 14" - Greengravbong14grn
RAW Rolling Tray - Smallrawtraysm
Puffco Peak Travel Pack - Blackpuffcopeakpackblk
Hoss Beaker Bong - 18" - Clearhossbong18clr

*based on recommended UPC logic below

Recommended UPC Logic for Accessories

[Brand][ItemType][Size][KeyDescriptor]

ComponentDescriptionExample
BrandShort form of the brand name, all lowercasegravrawpuffco
Item TypeAbbreviated product typebongtraygrinder
SizeNumerical size or model if relevant14 (for 14 inches)100 (for 100 pcs)
Key DescriptorColour, material, or feature abbreviationgrn (green), clr (clear), blk (black)

Best Practices for Accessory UPCs

  • All lowercase (no caps).
  • Consistent abbreviations for colours, materials, and size (e.g.  grn for green,  glss  for glass,  sm  for small).
  • Item types should be clear and use a fixed list to avoid accidental mismatches (e.g. always use  bong, not sometimes glassbong, sometimes  waterpipe).
  • Short and intuitive — staff should be able to guess or remember UPCs so that they can easily search for products at the till.
  • Follow the same logic across all accessory products. e.g. In the recommended UPC logic, Brand always comes first.

Optional Enhancements

  • If you carry many variations of a product, you can add suffixes:
    • Size variant (e.g.  sm,  lg,  xl)
    • Special editions (e.g.  pro,  kit,  mini)
    • Gendered joints (e.g.  mj for male joint,  fj for female joint)

  • Example: gravbong14grnxl  →  GRAV 14" Bong, Green, XL version
  • gravbong14grnmj  →  GRAV 14" Bong, Green, Male Joint
